Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan discuss prospects of cooperation in energy sphere

The first meeting of the joint working group established on the basis of the Memorandum of understanding on the future development of cooperation between the governments of Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan in the field of energy dated August 8, 2017 was held in Baku. This was reported by the Azerbaijani news Agency APA.

As reported by APA in the press service of the foreign Ministry, the meeting was attended by delegations headed by Deputy foreign Minister Khalaf Khalafov and Chairman of the state Committee on the Caspian sea under the President of Turkmenistan Murad Atajanov.

The participants of the meeting stressed that the approval in Moscow at the end of last year of the draft "Convention on the legal status of the Caspian sea" will serve to address issues of mutual interest in the Caspian sea.

The parties discussed the prospects of development of energy cooperation between the two countries on the principles of equality and mutual benefit to achieve the objectives of the Memorandum of understanding and noted that such cooperation will make a great contribution to the economy of Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan.

The parties also discussed issues related to the division of the Caspian sea bottom between Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan.

 Taking into account the fact that both countries have high energy potential, issues of improving the legal framework for the Caspian sea to reach future agreements on combining efforts and expanding energy projects were discussed, the Agency APA notes.

The parties agreed to hold the next meeting in Turkmenistan.
