Official visits of the President of Turkmenistan to Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are planned for the near future. Vice-Chairman and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan Rashid Meredov announced the preparation of the visits at a government meeting last Friday.
As it was noted during the meeting, the strengthening and expansion of cooperation with the countries of the Middle East is one of the key directions of Turkmenistan's foreign policy. In this context, the positive dynamics of Turkmen-Kuwait and Turkmen-UAE relations was noted, it evidenced by regular contacts at the governmental level and between our foreign policy agencies, as well as cooperation within international organizations, including UN, OIC etc.
R. Meredov presented to the head of the state the prepared programs of the upcoming visits, following which it is planned to sign a large package of bilateral documents.
Having noted the constructive nature of relations with Kuwait and the UAE, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov told about the presence of impressive potential and prospects for building up bilateral trade and economic ties, boosting investment activities and business contacts.
Emphasizing the importance of the upcoming high-level talks aimed at identifying key areas of cooperation with Kuwait and the UAE on a long-term basis, the President gave the vice-chairman a number of relevant instructions to prepare and ensure a high level of organizational visits.
In November last year, the delegation of Turkmenistan held meetings with the leadership of the government and the office of the Emir of Kuwait, as well as the Kuwait Fund for Arab economic development. Investments, trade, construction, mining, energy, business were named as the main directions of development of interstate cooperation between the two countries.
In addition, the possibility of intensifying contacts in the fuel and energy complex is also the subject of discussion. Taking into account the fact that Turkmenistan and Kuwait are the owners of one of the largest hydrocarbon reserves in the world, the parties have previously expressed interest in cooperation in the development and export of energy resources to international markets.
At the second meeting of the Joint Committee on cooperation between Turkmenistan and the UAE held in December 2017 in Ashgabat, the possibilities of intensifying cooperation in trade, economic, fuel and energy, transport and communication, banking and Finance spheres were discussed. A great potential in cooperation in natural gas processing, receipt of finished products from the gas and supply it to world markets were also noted. At the end of the meeting, a Memorandum of understanding on cooperation between the government of Turkmenistan and the Abu Dhabi Development Fund was signed. The parties agreed to hold the third meeting of the Joint cooperation Committee in Abu Dhabi in 2018.
Turkmenistan also plans to take part in the world exhibition "EXPO-2020", which will be held in Dubai (UAE) from 20 October 2020 to 10 April 2021.
Ashgabat is also interested in attracting major financial and investment structures of Kuwait and the UAE to the construction of the TAPI gas pipeline. It is known that since December, 2015 the Turkmen section TAPI is under construction, and on February 23 this year the construction of the Afghan section of the gas pipeline was started.
The UAE company “Dragon Oil”, which develops oil and gas fields in the Turkmen sector of the Caspian sea under the terms of the production sharing agreement, is one of the largest foreign investors in Turkmenistan. Another Emirate company “Petrofac” participated in the implementation of a major service project for the development of a huge gas field "Galkynysh", the resources of which will provide long-term export of "blue fuel" to the markets of a number of foreign countries.
