President of Turkmenistan congratulated his Afghan counterpart on the extension of the mandate of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan

In a telephone conversation, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov congratulated Afghan President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani on the adoption at a recent meeting of the UN Security Council of a Resolution on the extension of the mandate of the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan. 

Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov also noted that the active position of Turkmenistan and Afghanistan in the development of regional and interregional cooperation is the subject of strong support from the UN.

By this document, the members of the UN Security Council supported regional projects in Afghanistan development, including the construction initiated by Ashgabat of the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) gas pipeline and the Kerki-Imamnazar-Akina railway, which is the starting point of the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Tajikistan steel corridor, as well as projects for the construction of power lines and fiber-optic communication Turkmenistan - Afghanistan-Pakistan.

The resolution, which takes into account the results of the VII Regional Economic Cooperation conference on Afghanistan, held on 14 and 15 November 2017 in Ashgabat, urges the international community to make further efforts to strengthen the process of regional economic cooperation, including measures to facilitate regional communications, trade and transit, including in the framework of the Lazurite corridor, and the creation of workplaces in Afghanistan.

Discussing the issues of Turkmen-Afghan cooperation, the interlocutors noted the high dynamics of the expansion of partnership in both bilateral and multilateral formats. The President of Afghanistan noted that the construction of the TAPI gas pipeline, transport and communication projects initiated by the Turkmen leader will be an invaluable contribution to the peaceful settlement of the situation in Afghanistan and sustainable socio-economic development of the entire region.

Mohammad Ashraf Ghani emphasized that the construction of the Afghan section of the TAPI gas pipeline would give a powerful impetus to economic development and will contribute to the strengthening of peace and stability in Afghanistan.

Recalling the recent meeting on February 23, 2018 at the Turkmen-Afghan border and in the Afghan city of Herat on the occasion of the launch of the construction of the Afghan section of TAPI, power lines and fiber-optic communication on the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan route, as well as the opening of the new railway Serkhetabat-Turgundi, the interlocutors highlighted the great importance of these projects from geo-economic and geopolitical points of view. 

- Turkmenistan will continue to take an active part in international efforts to revive neighboring Afghanistan, and to assist in the restoration of its socio-economic infrastructure, thus supporting the Afghan people in their desire for a peaceful and prosperous life, - G. Berdymuhamedov said.

The presidents of Turkmenistan and Afghanistan exchanged views on a number of regional and international issues of mutual interest.

During the conversation Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov emphasized that Turkmenistan will fully contribute to the further promotion of joint projects, including the Lazurite corridor, which will help to attract investment in the development of the Afghan economy.
