The EU welcomes the intentions of potential suppliers to join the SGC, - Shefchovich

The European Union (EU) welcomes the interest of additional potential suppliers to join the project "Southern gas corridor", which provides for the transportation of Azerbaijani gas to Europe, said Trend Vice-President of the European Commission for the energy Union Marosh Shefchovich.

"We believe that the source of the southern gas corridor is not limited to the Shah Deniz field. We therefore welcome the interest of potential additional suppliers of natural gas from the Caspian region, Central Asia, Middle East, Eastern Mediterranean and the Black sea to join the SGC for further diversification of natural gas supplies to Europe", - said Vice-President of the European Commission.

In this context, Shefchovich noted that the EU is negotiating with Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan in the direction of the implementation of the Trans-Caspian pipeline system project.

The Vice President added that the EU is ready to continue negotiations on the terms of potential, commercially viable supplies on the basis of the Ashgabat Declaration signed in May 2015 to ensure the development of energy cooperation between Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Turkey and the EU.

In 2011, the European Union adopted a mandate to negotiate a legally binding Treaty between the EU, Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan on construction of TRANS Caspian pipeline system. The EU first proposed an agreement in support of the infrastructure project.

The Trans-Caspian pipeline agreement will lay the Foundation for the construction of an underwater pipeline connecting Turkmenistan with Azerbaijan and, in turn, will link this pipeline to the infrastructure that will deliver gas from Central Asia to the EU.
