In 2019, Turkmenistan will chair the Commonwealth of Independent States. The decision to transfer the chairmanship of the CIS from Tajikistan to our country was made at the suggestion of the Turkmen side at the summit of the heads of the CIS member States, which was held in Dushanbe in September 2018.
The next meeting of the CIS heads of state Will be held on October 11, 2019 in Ashgabat. Also in the Turkmen capital at the end of May this year is scheduled to hold a meeting of the Council of heads of government of the CIS countries.
As previously emphasized President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, the priority of Turkmenistan's presidency in the CIS will be the strengthening of trust between countries, the maintenance of stability and security, the development of international partnership in the energy sector and the transport and communication sector.
Ashgabat will also pay great attention to cultural, humanitarian, scientific, educational and sports ties between the States of the Commonwealth.
Turkmenistan is an associate member of the CIS. This form of membership in the organization allows Ashgabat not to take part in those projects of the Commonwealth that do not fully take into account the interests of Turkmenistan.
Ashgabat previously chaired the CIS in 2012. Then the Turkmen presidency was recognized as one of the best in the history of the Commonwealth.
