A seminar that opened in Mary on February 10 is dedicated to ensuring the security of regional infrastructures within the framework of the "Istanbul process" and cooperation on Afghanistan, the website of the foreign Ministry of Turkmenistan reports.
The meeting is attended by representatives of the Ministry of foreign Affairs, ministries of internal Affairs, defense, energy and oil and gas sector of Turkmenistan and Afghanistan, as well as authorized representatives of the participating States of the "Istanbul process". The seminar was organized with the assistance of the OSCE Center in Ashgabat.
During the first day of the event, the parties noted the positive experience of cooperation between organizations of Turkmenistan and Afghanistan and considered the promotion of regional infrastructure projects, including the construction of the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India gas pipeline (TAPI) and TAP power lines.
The workshop is aimed at enhancing the functionality of the regional connecting infrastructure in the context of the "Heart of Asia-Istanbul process", promoting regional cross-border cooperation through the exchange of experience, and discussing international practices and approaches related to the management of potential threats.
The workshop will run until February 12.
Among the States participating in the "Istanbul process" are Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, China, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, the Russian Federation, Saudi Arabia, Tajikistan, Turkey, Turkmenistan, and the United Arab Emirates.
The UN is also a partner. This process is also supported by many other States and international organizations.
Turkmenistan is taking active steps to provide practical assistance to the people of Afghanistan in restoring the country's economy. Ashgabat has been supplying its southern neighbor with electricity at discounted prices for more than two decades. The first stage of the Asian international railway transport corridor "Kerki — Ymamnazar (Turkmenistan)–Akina (Afghanistan)"has been launched. The Turkmen section of the TAPI gas pipeline is being built at a high pace.
