The President of Turkmenistan and the EU Ambassador discussed cooperation priorities

The European vector is one of the key directions of Turkmenistan's foreign policy strategy. President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov said this on Monday at a meeting with the European Union's Ambassador to Turkmenistan, Diego Ruiz Alonso, who presented the head of state with credentials.

The diplomat conveyed warm greetings from the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, and the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and confirmed the interest of European countries in further strengthening fruitful cooperation with Turkmenistan.

In turn, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov noted that over the past years, relations between Turkmenistan and the European community have been steadily developing on a bilateral and multilateral basis, and joint projects and programs in various fields have been successfully implemented and are being implemented.

During the meeting, the parties discussed issues of enhancing partnership in a number of key areas, including political, economic, legal, humanitarian and environmental spheres. In this regard, a significant role is assigned to the European Union's representative office in Turkmenistan opened in Ashgabat, which is designed to make cooperation more effective and efficient, as well as to contribute to the successful implementation of the new EU Strategy in Central Asia.

The subject of increased attention was the formation of new international transport routes on the Eurasian continent. Ensuring energy security, diversifying energy supplies to world markets, and resolving the situation in Afghanistan were also identified as priority aspects of cooperation.

Construction of the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India gas pipeline, power lines and fiber-optic communication along the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan route, modernization of the rail and road network that became part of the Lazurit transit and transport corridor-the implementation of these projects will contribute to solving social and humanitarian issues, create new prospects for the development of fruitful cooperation in the region, the meeting stressed.

They touched upon the issues of preparation for the celebration of the 25th anniversary of Turkmenistan's permanent neutrality, which will be dedicated to the high-level international conference "the Policy of neutrality and its importance in ensuring international peace, security and sustainable development", which is scheduled to be held on December 12, 2020 in Ashgabat.

The diplomat said that the EU expects effective cooperation with Turkmenistan.

Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov expressed confidence in building up a fruitful partnership with the European community based on the principles of mutual respect, constructiveness and long-term sustainability.
