The Presidents of Turkmenistan and Afghanistan phone-discussed issues of interstate cooperation

Priority aspects of interstate and regional partnership were discussed on Tuesday, March 24, during a telephone conversation between the President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and the President of Afghanistan Mohammad Ashraf Ghani.

During the conversation, the Turkmen leader congratulated his Afghan counterpart on his re-election to the highest state post.

Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov invited Mohammad Ashraf Ghani to participate in the upcoming international conferences and events in December on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of Turkmenistan's neutrality. The offer was gratefully accepted.

The head of Afghanistan stressed that his country values relations with neutral Turkmenistan and highly values the peaceful foreign policy pursued by President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, which is an important factor in maintaining the geopolitical balance, peace and security in the region.

The interlocutors noted the trend observed in recent years to increase the Turkmen-Afghan cooperation based on the principles of good-neighborliness and equality in both bilateral and multilateral formats.

During the conversation, it was noted that fruitful cooperation between the neighboring States is carried out primarily in the trade and economic, fuel and energy, transport and communication spheres. In particular, large-scale projects are being implemented, such as the construction of the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) transnational gas pipeline, a high-voltage power line and fiber-optic communication along the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan route, etc.

Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov stressed that the favorable geographical position of the two countries is of great importance in the implementation of strategic projects for the formation of new transit and transport corridors. Among them is a new joint project on the creation of the Afghanistan-Turkmenistan-Azerbaijan-Georgia-Turkey corridor, which is designed to help build up trade and economic ties between the States of the region and increase trade between the countries of Central and South Asia and Europe.

Expressing gratitude for the real assistance to the Afghan people in building a peaceful life, Ashraf Ghani expressed firm confidence that the approaches proposed By the President of Turkmenistan to solving the Afghan problem, the major transport and communication projects initiated by him will make an invaluable contribution to the peaceful settlement of the situation in Afghanistan, strengthening the foundations of stability and security, and sustainable socio-economic development of the entire region.
