Turkmenistan will announce its accession to the Global Methane Commitment during the 28th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP-28), which will be held in Dubai, UAE from November 30 to December 12.  Vice-Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmebistan and Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov spoke about this at a government meeting last Friday.

 R. Meredov reported on preparations for participation in the 28th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP-28), as well as on the documents that are planned to be adopted during this forum, and on the events planned within its framework.

As expected, the Vice-Chairman noted, at the COP-28 Conference the attention of the world's leading countries will be drawn to the issue of joining the Global Methane Commitment (GMC) as one of the main steps in combating climate change.

To date, about 150 countries have joined the Global Methane Commitment (GMC).  In this regard, it was proposed to announce the accession of Turkmenistan to GMP during the COP-28 Conference.  This issue was considered at the next meeting of the Interdepartmental Commission on Environmental Protection, held on November 23 this year.

At the same time, it is proposed to continue interaction with international organizations and partner countries within the framework of joint projects and programs aimed at meeting GMC conditions at the national level, Meredov noted.

The relevant ministries and departments of the country have analyzed the documents that are planned to be adopted at the COP-28 Conference.  Based on this, it is proposed that Turkmenistan join a number of them.

A proposal was also voiced for the participation of representatives of relevant structures of Turkmenistan in high-level side events, which will be held on the sidelines of the COP-28 Conference from December 3 to 10.

After listening to the report, President Serdar Berdimuhamedov emphasized the importance of the documents envisaged for adoption at the 28th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.  In this context, noting the need to further strengthen cooperation with the participating parties, the head of state gave specific instructions to the Vice-Chairman and the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
