The expansion of the “Southern Gas Corridor” (SGC) may contribute to further diversification of gas supplies, but this will depend on market demand. European Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simson said this, Trend reports.Simson noted that the “Southern Gas Corridor” is an important project to diversify energy supplies to EU countries. “A corridor will soon open and gas will be transported from the Caspian Sea to the EU. The project provides for the supply of gas from a new source. This will increase the security of gas supplies in our region,” the European Commissioner added.The “Southern Gas Corridor” provides for the creation of a pipeline infrastructure for the transportation of Azerbaijani gas from the development of the “Shah Deniz-2” field through Turkey to Europe at the first stage. Azerbaijani gas deliveries to Europe are expected from October 2020 in the amount of 10 billion cubic meters.It is worth noting that the further expansion of the “Southern Gas Corridor” provides for the connection of other gas sources in the Caspian region. One of the promising countries is Turkmenistan, which is one of the three world leaders in terms of natural gas reserves. To join the “SGC” system, the construction project of the Transcapian gas pipeline is discussed, the capacity of which can be from 10 to 30 billion cubic meters per year.
