The Chinese company Sinopec has started drilling the deepest oil and gas well in Asia in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in the northwest of China, the Xinhua news agency reports.
The well at the Tarim field on the edge of the Taklamakan desert is expected to be 9,472 meters deep, more than 600 meters higher than Mount Everest, the petrochemical company said.
According to experts, this drilling shows that China is a world leader in ultra-deep drilling technology.
