At the International Conference "International Transport and Transit Corridors: Interconnection and Development - 2024" (ITTC-2024), held on November 26-27 in Ashgabat, experts from Turkmenistan presented a strategy for transforming the transport sector, emphasizing its key role in solving global environmental problems.

As Deputy Director General of TULM OJSC Rahim Khanayev noted at the forum, transport today is one of the main sources of greenhouse gas emissions, generating almost a quarter of the world's carbon dioxide emissions.

The key point of his speech was the thesis that transport can become not only a problem, but also a solution to the climate agenda. The speaker especially emphasized: "Sustainable transport is not only an option, but also a catalyst for progress in many areas of sustainable development".

According to Khanayev, a large-scale infrastructure project – the electrification of the Turkmenabat-Turkmenbashi railway line, which is more than 1,100 kilometers long – will become a concrete step in implementing this concept.

This ambitious plan will not only reduce CO2 emissions, but will also significantly increase the country's transit potential, Khanayev noted.

The speaker also emphasized that the upcoming UN Decade of Sustainable Transport, which starts in 2026, will become a unique window of opportunity for the global transformation of the transport industry.
