GECF Secretary General emphasizes Turkmenistan’s role in global gas markets

The conference “International Year of Peace and Trust: the Role of Interregional Economic Cooperation in Ensuring Sustainable Development” was attended by the Secretary General of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) Mohamed Hamel.

Speaking at the thematic session “TAPI Gas Pipeline: Economic, Organizational and Legal Issues,” Mohamed Hamel emphasized the critical role of natural gas in global energy security and sustainable development, paying special attention to the enormous potential of Turkmenistan as a key supplier of energy resources.

He also emphasized the country’s key position as the fifth largest natural gas reserve holder in the world.

Noting Turkmenistan’s plans to significantly increase natural gas production, he praised the development of the large Galkynysh field, strategic cross-border infrastructure projects, including the expansion of the Central Asia-China gas pipeline (Line D), the TAPI gas pipeline and the Trans-Caspian gas pipeline.

The head of the organization emphasized that the GECF goals are in line with Turkmenistan’s long-term energy strategy. He praised Ashgabat’s efforts to strengthen regional energy security, promote economic integration and sustainable development.

Hamel also confirmed that natural gas remains a critical foundation for a just and inclusive energy transition. Global demand for natural gas is expected to grow by 32% by mid-century, while an orderly transition to green energy requires strengthened international cooperation and significant investment in infrastructure.

In conclusion of his speech, Mohammed Hamel expressed hope for stronger ties with Turkmenistan, praising our country’s leadership in promoting regional energy cooperation and expressing confidence that Turkmenistan’s energy diplomacy will make a significant contribution to creating a more secure, sustainable and prosperous regional and global energy landscape.(Based on the GECF press release).
