At the regular meeting of the Coordination Committee of the project "Green Development of Turkmenistan: European Union: Political Dialogue and Action on Climate Change for 2024-2028", technical work, practical plans and pilot projects in this area were presented and approved, according to the website of the State Concern "Turkmengas".

Strengthening partnerships in this area is carried out in accordance with the Roadmap for the Development of International Cooperation, aimed at studying the issues of Turkmenistan's accession to the World Methane Initiative for 2023-2024, approved by the Decree of the President of Turkmenistan dated June 16, 2023, as well as within the framework of the "Agreement of Understanding" signed on May 14, 2024 between the Ministry of Energy of Turkmenistan, the State Concern "Turkmengas" and the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ).

The project, funded by the European Union and the German Federal Foreign Office, aims to promote renewable energy sources, reduce methane and greenhouse gas emissions, and improve energy efficiency, creating an effective dialogue between government agencies of Turkmenistan and the EU.

The implementation of the signed documents will be aimed at sustainable "green" development of Turkmenistan, taking into account international experience and advanced European standards. The main activities of the project include reducing methane and greenhouse gas emissions, promoting renewable energy sources, improving energy efficiency, developing the capacity of national specialists and raising public awareness.

The project was officially launched at the first meeting of the steering committee of the GIZ project "Green Development of Turkmenistan: European Union: Policy Dialogue and Action on Climate Change for 2024-2028", held on September 13, 2024 in Ashgabat.

During the reporting period, the development of a special strategy for the promotion of renewable energy sources and energy efficiency was launched. In September 2024, a youth forum on climate change was held in Mary with the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan.

On February 25, 2025, the second meeting of the Coordination Committee was held at the Natural Gas Research Institute of the State Concern "Turkmengas". The participants of the meeting discussed the results of the work completed in 2024, plans for 2025 and further practical implementation of the project.

Together with experts from the State Concern "Turkmengas", a technical passport for LDAR software and equipment was developed, designed to detect methane leaks during the development of gas fields. A list of the necessary equipment for the creation of a "Methane Training Center" was also compiled on the basis of the industry research institute of the State Concern "Turkmengas". Currently, GIZ is working on the supply of equipment.

“We express our deep gratitude to the President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov for strengthening active cooperation with world countries, including the European Union, in the area of improving the environment”, notes the head of the environmental protection department of the Natural Gas Research Institute of the SC "Turkmengas", candidate of geological and mineralogical sciences, member of the project’s coordinating committee Muhammetberdy Bashiev.
