Chinese researchers have developed a hybrid electrobiological system that converts carbon dioxide into complex carbon compounds using electrolysis and yeast fermentation. A description of the development is published in the journal Nature Catalysis.
The new plant is a two-stage technology. At the first stage, during electrolysis, acetic acid is formed from carbon dioxide. Then, with the help of fermentation, glucose and other complex organic compounds are created.
It is also noted that Chinese scientists used a genetically modified fungus Saccharomyces cerevisiae, which produced glucose, to obtain the final result.
The researchers believe that their proposed method will help in solving environmental problems and creating a circular economy.
