Establishing gas links with Turkmenistan remains at the heart of the EU's strategic aspirations for the oil and gas resources of Central Asia. This was stated by the Director General of the Oil and Gas Corporation of Georgia Giorgi Chikovani, speaking on Wednesday at the 27th International Conference "Oil and Gas of Turkmenistan".
As Chikovani emphasized, Turkmenistan has been considered a part of the Southern Gas Corridor for more than 14 years.
This corridor can be expanded to handle additional flows of Azerbaijani as well as Central Asian gas, which gives Turkmenistan additional opportunities to promote its energy resources to alternative markets, the head of the Georgian Oil and Gas Corporation believes.
At the same time, he noted the importance of the agreement between Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan on joint exploration and development of the Dostluk field in the Caspian Sea.
“At the moment, the EU’s interests in the security and diversification of energy supplies are in line with Turkmenistan’s desire to diversify its gas export routes more than ever before”, Chikovani said, noting that not only the EU, but also Azerbaijan and Georgia are interested in natural gas supplies. from Turkmenistan, which has enough resources to meet the growing demand for energy.
In this regard, he called for a closer dialogue between the EU and the governments of the countries of the South Caucasus and Central Asia, as well as representatives of industry and international financial circles.
