Restoring stable energy supplies to world markets can play a decisive role in combating the pandemic and accelerate economic recovery, UN Resident Coordinator in Turkmenistan Elena Panova said at the 25th International Conference "Oil and Gas of Turkmenistan 2020" held in Ashgabat.

“The crisis has disrupted supply chains around the world, including energy systems, stifling investment, threatening to slow the spread of clean energy technologies and, more importantly, making it difficult for people to access affordable energy,” Panova continued.

“We support the position of Turkmenistan that economic recovery should take place on fair and transparent principles based on equality, recognition of the interests of all participants in this process and reasonable pricing. Diversification of energy flows is the most important aspect in achieving this goal,”said Panova.

The diplomat recalled that “for this purpose, Turkmenistan systematically promotes initiatives related to the reliability and stability of energy supplies to world markets through a series of international dialogues on the security of energy transit. The result of these discussions was the adoption of two resolutions of the UN General Assembly in 2008 and 2013 "Reliable and stable transit of energy and its role in ensuring sustainable development and international cooperation."

- Turkmenistan also calls for the creation of a special body - the UN Energy Council, as well as the UN Expert Group on Energy Security with a mandate to develop a new international legal mechanism - the corresponding UN Convention - to ensure global energy security, Panova said.

"Permanent neutrality is a great achievement of the national policy of Turkmenistan, which has become an important political factor in international relations," said the UN Resident Coordinator in Turkmenistan.
