Representatives of the Turkmen Energy Forum (TEF) took part in the International Energy Forum “Platts London Energy Forum 2025”, organized by S&P Global Platts on February 24.
The event, which took place at the fashionable Westminster Hotel, Park Plaza, was attended by more than 500 delegates from 200 companies from 40 countries.
The key theme of the London Forum was the analysis of energy markets and the integration of traditional energy sources with the energy of the future. Innovative ideas, networking opportunities and discussions on the pressing issues and emerging trends shaping the energy landscape of tomorrow were discussed.
The forum also addressed global energy issues: fossil fuel consumption in Europe and North America; decarbonization and the political, economic and technological challenges associated with it; and the pressure on global energy companies associated with the need to transition to clean energy.
The energy sector of Turkmenistan was the focus of attention of the forum participants. Thus, within the framework of the session: "Global Gas in the European Context: Market Prospects for This and Next Year" the topic of the start of swap supplies of Turkmen gas to Turkey, as well as the construction of the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) gas pipeline were actively discussed. The Forum also discussed such topics as global energy and the political environment, trends and priorities, revealing opportunities to achieve zero emissions, as well as challenges and opportunities in the renewable energy market.
The key trend of the Forum was the active implementation of artificial intelligence in the oil and gas industry, including geological exploration , production and subsequent sale of hydrocarbons. Compared to last year's forum, where the main emphasis was on renewable energy sources and the rejection of the use of hydrocarbon raw materials, the focus of the presentations has shifted towards the active use of natural gas, which is distinguished by its environmental friendliness, as a key fuel in the energy transition.
recurring theme in the presentations was that natural gas would be important in reducing air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions by switching from high-emitting fuels such as coal and oil, particularly in power generation.
According to S&P Platts experts, 30 billion m3 of gas that Turkmenistan annually exports to China is equivalent to 60 million tons of coal, which is a clear confirmation of our country's contribution to reducing air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, which makes a positive contribution to improving the climate in the region. Due to the increase in the share of renewable energy sources, natural gas is currently an economically effective option for solving the problem of supply disruptions, being a suitable alternative both from the point of view of ecology and the entire technological chain.
In this context, with the world's fourth-largest natural gas reserves, Turkmenistan has much to offer international investors: from the development of the world's largest onshore gas field, Galkynysh , to favorable natural and climatic conditions for the effective development of solar and wind energy.
The Forum delegates were presented with invitations and the program of the International Forum on Attracting Investments into the Economy of Turkmenistan (TEIF 2025), as well as key investment projects, including development of further stages of development of the Galkynysh gas field ; participation in the development of offshore blocks in the Turkmen sector of the Caspian Sea; optimization of oil and gas production at mature fields; chemical processing of oil and gas; construction of an underground gas storage facility; EPC contracts for large industrial projects.
At a meeting with the CEO of S&P Global Platts Craig Powers The involvement of the company's leading experts based in the Singapore office as moderators of sessions at TEIF 2025 was discussed. The extensive experience of the company's experts, who have a solid reputation in global energy markets, including in the South-East Asia region , as well as the use of their client base will allow attracting new companies to the Forum interested in investing in the oil and gas industry of Turkmenistan.
The parties also discussed a series of technical trainings for specialists in the oil and gas industry of Turkmenistan, which are planned to be held within the framework of upcoming scientific conferences by S&P Platts Global experts.
TEF representatives also took part in London Energy Week, organized by the UK Energy Institute, which took place at the Queen Elizabeth II Centre from 25-27 February and attracted over 1,500 delegates from 50 countries. Notably, many of the London Energy Week delegates are active in the annual conferences and exhibitions «Oil and Gas of Turkmenistan (OGT)» in Ashgabat.
Emissions was the focus of attention of the panel discussion on decarbonization of energy and industry. In particular, the country's positive experience in reducing methane emissions at the Darvaza field was noted.
Following a meeting between TEF representatives, the executive director of the company Capterio, which is engaged in satellite monitoring of emissions, and the senior editor of the authoritative specialized magazine “New Energy World” (UK) Will Dalrymple reached an agreement to prepare a scientific paper with fresh data on Darvaza, taking into account the new borehole drilled near the crater.
Both experts were invited to the upcoming scientific and practical conference: "Environmental aspects of hydrocarbon field development (TESC 2025)", which will be held on June 5, World Environment Day. This forum is designed to highlight key issues related to the reduction of methane emissions and environmental aspects in the production and processing of oil and gas. Despite the fact that the TESC Forum was launched only two years ago, it has become an authoritative global event, bringing together technical experts from the world's leading oil and gas companies, academia, as well as representatives of international organizations and financial institutions.
Following the visit of the Turkmen Energy Forum delegation to London, it was noted that the thematic areas of the two events reflect the level of deep integration of the Turkmen economy into global realities. Thus, ensuring global demand for clean and affordable energy and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, which are the focus of the forums in London, have become the main priorities for several years in a row. key topics of discussion platforms in Turkmenistan. It is decarbonization that plays a significant role in modern energy transformations. Its importance is determined by the fight against climate change, the transition to clean energy, economic modernization and compliance with international obligations, including those arising from the Global Methane Commitment, which Turkmenistan joined in December 2023.
